She looked down at the thick construction paper resting in his hands. It was a bright crayon drawing. It was unmistakably Lily's meticulous artistic style. Three distinct figures stood together in a row. The tallest figure wore a dark shirt. The second figure had long dark hair. The smallest figure stood safely between the two adults. Underneath the tallest figure, careful block letters spelled Daddy. Underneath the second figure, the letters spelled Rora. Underneath the small figure, the neat letters spelled Lily. At the very top of the page, a large title was printed in heavy blue crayon.

Ace chimed in, his eyes shining with pride. I couldn't help but smile at their infectious energy, feeling a warmth spread through my heart. Pushing aside my worries for a moment, I shifted my focus to them, eager to see their creations. "That's wonderful, sweeties! Let me see." I beckoned them closer, and they eagerly rushed over, holding their drawings into my hands. Luna's drawing shown a colorful garden scene, complete with flowers, butterflies, and a shining sun, while Ace's featured a tall tree laden with apples, surrounded by smiling stick-figure people.

Chloe walked back to the nursery to fetch the boy. "Liam, dinner's ready. Did you finish your draw—" Her voice died in her throat. Chloe’s hands balled into trembling fists as she stared at the canvas. It wasn't a happy family portrait. It was a depiction of hell. In the center of the paper, Liam had drawn three figures, but they weren't people. Two of them were towering "monsters," and the third was a small, broken boy cowering in a dark corner. The first monster was a man with eyes the size of saucers, wearing a tattered T-shirt. In one hand, he brandished a heavy belt; in the other, a glowing cigarette butt that he was pressing toward the crying boy on the ground.

“So get going everyone. Bring out your pens and notebooks and try drawing them as and when possible. Your Luna will help you if you get stuck but it’s pretty much a lot of practice and patience till you all learn to draw them.” Madeleine went to the whiteboard and erased everything we had written previously. Taking out a marker, she began drawing it, “So these are the set of runes, I had drawn on the wooden stumps to free the wisps. I had to retrace it nine times in a circle to finally free them all. Hence, I do believe that we might have to draw it in a circle around the lich that will hold him in like a cage. To not confuse you, I will draw the mirror image…”

I smiled, forcing my voice to sound bright as I walked into the room and dropped to my knees next to her. "Good morning, Mama! Look what I made!" Lorna cheered as her eyes sparkled with excitement as she held up a piece of paper. "What is it, baby? Did you draw a picture of a princess?" I asked, reaching for the paper from her hands. "No! It’s a picture of Aunty Mina, i drew her because I like her very much!" Lorna giggled, pointing at the drawing. I looked at the paper, my heart ached as I saw the drawing, but my eyes immediately dropped to the bottom of the page. There, a few wobbly letters were scribbled in red crayon.

Something older. She looked at the girl, who was now drawing quietly with a piece of charcoal on a flat stone. At first, she drew trees and stars. But soon, her hand changed direction. She drew a circle — the same one from outside. Liora froze. “Where did you see that?” The girl blinked. “I don’t know. It just came into my head.” Jonathan laughed. “Looks cool! Like magic!” Liora’s voice was sharp. “Don’t touch it.”

I went over to them and sat beside Max, watching Lina make a display. “Mommy! Look what I drew.” Lina most times had a hard time pronouncing some words but Liam was easy to pick up. I took her Art and stared at it. It was a picture of herself, Liam, Max and I. She drew it like a family, indicating Max as her father. I stared at it then back to her. “Is it beautiful mommy?” She asked, excitedly. “Very beautiful, my princess.” I looked over to Max who only watched the scene unfold.

She drank her tea and listened and occasionally looked at Lily with the particular expression of someone who was seeing something they had not expected and finding it unexpectedly good. Lily caught her looking at one point. “Do you want to see my drawing,” Lily asked her. Juliana looked slightly surprised. “Yes,” she said. “I would.” Lily climbed down and went to the fridge and pulled the drawing off and brought it to Juliana and stood beside her explaining each part of it in detail. The green cloud was the apple tree. The purple rectangle was the swing. The tall figures were everyone and the small one was Mr. Bear. Juliana listened to every word seriously.

The way their own breathing sounded. Eli started drawing. Not stories. Just lines. Circles. Swirls. He drew the moons. Over and over. Not to remember them. Just because they were pretty. One day he drew Luna’s Heart. Low. Pink. And without meaning to, he drew a small bed of clouds under it. Ori saw it. “What’s that?” “A place for it to rest,” Eli said. “If it’s been watching us for 3000 years... maybe it’s tired of standing.”

Then she froze. “What?” Selina didn’t answer. Instead, she slowly rotated the page. The entire page contained a portrait, a detailed drawing of Lyra. The resemblance was unmistakable, the same eyes, the same features, the same face. Even the small scar near her eyebrow had been included. Ronan was the first to break the silence. “This can’t be real.” Lyra couldn’t disagree. The drawing looked recent, accurate and impossible. Her mother had created it years before her disappearance. Years before Lyra became the woman she was now, and somehow she had drawn her exactly.
