As she pulled it free, a folded piece of parchment, brittle with age, fluttered to the floor. She bent to pick it up. It was a child’s drawing, done in clumsy charcoal. A stick-figure woman and a smaller stick-figure girl holding hands under a lopsided sun. At the bottom, in a child’s uncertain script: Me and Mama. Luna. A memory, sweet and terrible, lanced through her—a moment of stolen peace before the world had taught her its harsh taxonomy.

Her phone was still in her hand, the last words of Selena’s call echoing through her mind like a gunshot that hadn’t hit yet. He’s a target. A big one. Her eyes drifted back to the table, to where Pearl had left her half-finished lemonade beside a napkin covered in doodles. She stared at it absently. Then her gaze dropped. A corner of white paper peeked out from the side pocket of her bag. She reached for it. Unfolded it slowly. It was a drawing—crude, clumsy, and heartbreakingly earnest. Stick figures holding hands, coloured with uneven crayon strokes. A triangle of yellow meant to be the sun, a purple heart floating between them. Above each stick figure, names were scrawled in shaky letter

The kitchen was filled with the smell of garlic and sesame oil. I stood near the stove, stirring the sizzling vegetables with one hand while holding Lily’s little drawing in the other. “Does it look like Daddy?” she asked, standing on the stool beside me, peering into the paper she had just finished. I glanced down and smiled. The drawing was of Logan—well, a version of him with bright blue eyes, a rainbow tie, and a crown on his head. “Yes,” I said gently. “Very handsome.”

she says, very serious for someone whose ponytail is halfway to falling off. “Really?” I lean forward and catch the watercolor box before it drops. “Tell me all about it.” She sits up, shifting again: legs tucked under, one knee up, sketchbook on her lap. She flips to the middle. The page is full of doodles. There’s a drawing of a round table, four little stick figures with names floating over their heads: ME, CLARA, LEO, ANAÏS. In the middle of the table, a small box labeled in big letters: “CRAYON (NO EAT!)”

There was another with two shadowy figures as if you were looking at them in first person. “Lilly when did you draw these?” Luka asked. “The night before I knew who Kenny and Axel were to me. Why?” replied. Luka's brow furrowed as he examined the drawings more closely. "You drew these before you knew about the mate bond? Before the Moon Rose appeared?" Lilly nodded, moving to stand beside him. "I couldn't sleep that night. I kept having these images flash through my mind, so I drew them to try and make sense of it all." She pointed to the wolf drawing. "I didn't understand what the colors meant then."

No wonder Killian couldn’t look me in the eye this morning. I reach for the sketch pad Elara left by the nightstand. My fingers tremble, but I grip the pencil like it’s my lifeline. I don’t even think, I just draw. Symbols. Circles. Eyes with fire spilling from them. A wolf with a shattered spine. A crown that burns. A clock with no hands. My hand stops only when I notice the paper trembling beneath my touch. Not from me. From the floor. A low vibration hums through the wood. Like a warning.

I said gently, wrapping my finger. She giggled. “No, he is! He gave me this crayon box. Ask Jimmy if you don’t believe me.” She showed me her drawing: five figures. “That’s you in pink, Daddy in black, me in yellow, Jimmy in blue... and—” “And who’s this one in red?” I asked. “Why are there horns? Is that blood, Luna?” Before she could answer, Elane walked in. Luna quickly hid the sketchpad behind her back.

My eyes were enormous circles with jagged lines coming out—lightning, maybe. Underneath, in Rowan’s careful, wobbly handwriting: THE KERSED LUNA. The second panel had a moon with angry eyebrows and what I thought might be teeth. A tiny figure (me, presumably) stood under it, frowning. Panel three showed a blob with too many arms, and what I assumed was Malric’s crown, being bitten by a smaller blob with pointy teeth. Panel four was just me again, this time with a wolf tail and a baby in my arms, the angry moon now… smiling? Or having a stroke. It's hard to say.

Of course it was a surprise. I searched my hand bag for my sketch pad and I pulled it out. Walking straight to Aunty Jojo, I showed her the dress I had designed for Laila. I could tell she was impressed, cause she started flipping through the pad with stunned eyes. She brought her phone out and took pictures of the design. Laila was so excited,as well as Tana, but it wasn't the same with my mum. I could tell she was fuming but trying to keep calm because we were in public.

The raids, even with what we found and what I discovered about myself, it was a good distraction and kept me from focusing on Yasmine, how I treated her and that I failed her every time she needed me. I look down at the papers in front of me and realise that I have been doodling again, and it's similar to the carving I did on that trunk with Mary when I was younger. I had drawn Yasmine’s panther Lorelei with Morpheus’s wolf and the moon and hearts entwined with two crowns, but there were two differences: one was the adding of Zelda Yasmine’s Lycan and another very small pup, one side was panther the other Lycan.
