His First Kill, My Second Life
Orange flames flickered in the dark, rainy night, like the gateway to hell.
I reached the edge of the pit and, without a second thought, jumped in.
The hot embers burned my skin, and the smoke choked me, but I ignored it.
I clawed through the ashes, my voice a raw whisper. "No, no, no… Please. There has to be something left."
My hands were cut and burned by the hot coals, blood mixing with soot and mud, but I kept digging.
In a pile of debris that hadn't completely burned, I found the remains of a photo album.
