Standing before us, massive and impossible in the rooftop lights, was a dragon. A silver-scaled, ancient-eyed dragon. Watching us. Calm.

“He’s called Obsidian. He’s a friend,” Soren said proudly. “He’s our ride.”
Before I could decide if I was hallucinating, he was lifting me onto the creature’s surprisingly comfortable, leathery back. Obsidian shifted, muscles rolling beneath us, and then—with a single, mighty push of his wings—we were airborne.
