The thought of giving it away made my stomach twist, but I nodded. “O-Okay,” I stammered. She didn’t say anything, just continued brushing my hair in silence. I noticed how faded my hair looked—some parts were dull black, others streaked with gray. “I can help you with that,” she said suddenly, her voice cutting through the quiet. “Yeah... and please, trim those gray parts off,” I muttered, glancing at her reflection again. She didn’t reply, but she did as I asked. Gianna poured oil onto my hair, the thick, fragrant liquid soaking in before I felt a strange warmth spread across my scalp. As the oil worked its way through, my hair slowly changed, shimmering into a vibrant, sunbeam blonde.

I demanded, fury in my voice. Jade smirked, holding up a bottle of bleach. The strong, stinging smell hit my nose, and panic shot through me. “Oh no!" I shrieked, feeling the bleach burn my scalp. My hands flew to my head, desperately trying to wipe it away, but the taps in every room I tried were dry. They’d planned this. Minutes and minutes passed as they each blocked my way into every room for about 10 minutes. “Help!” I screamed, running to my room’s bathroom and plunging my head under the faucet. My heart sank as I watched strands of my hair fall out, and my once-brown hair turn a fiery, unnatural red and brown.

Instead of my normal mousy brown, it is silvery gray. Okay seriously now. What is going on? What is happening to me? Is this a trick? Is there bleach in the shampoo or something? If it's a trick, it isn't funny. I pick up the bottle and smell it. It smells like strawberries, not bleach. Weird. I have never heard of a wolf's eye or hair color changing when they are coming of age, but that's what the doctor thinks is happening. Diane comes in after lunch with paperwork and pamphlets for me. She hands me another little bag. "Just a little something to help you stay incognito until you are finished healing."

He wanted brown.” Pulled and parted and sliced. “He chose brown.” Chopped the platinum free, letting it fall to her shoulders. “That’s an answer right there. Brown not blonde.” Hair fluttered to land at her knees, peroxide strands littering the stranger’s wide knees and pudgy feet. Soon her palm raced over a bare scalp, fingertips discovering jagged and peeling nicks she never felt. Slick, bleeding cuts she failed to notice. The blade returned, the spit in her hand wetting the remaining tufts as she shaved close.

Blake is going to be getting here at 19:00 o'clock and I have an hour a half to get ready. I went to the washroom and took a shower. I washed my hair rather thoroughly because Blake enjoys running his fingers though my hair or sniffling it. And that is why I have taken liking to letting my hair down a lot so it could be easier for him to handle. Once I was done, I got out and wrapped a towel on my body and another, used to dry my hair.

She requested and I smiled at her. “Sure. I can do that,” I said and took the hairbrush from her and she hopped up on the bed while I stood up to get the height difference between us right. I brushed her long, brown, and silky hair down and detangled it. For a nine-year-old, her hair was pretty long.

I needed to be someone with a rougher background, someone who belonged in that world. I bought a box of hair dye from the drugstore. Platinum blonde, the kind that would completely change how I looked. Back home I spread newspapers on my bathroom floor and read the instructions twice before mixing the chemicals. The process took three hours. First bleaching my natural auburn hair until it was almost white, then applying the blonde color. The smell was awful and burned my eyes but I kept working. When I finally rinsed out the dye and looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself.

"How much do you want me to cut off?" "All of it. Any of the blonde. Just get rid of it. I'm never going back," Alex said with a flourish of her hand. Lexi giggled. Jimmy leaned back on his hands. A small smile twitched at the corners of his mouth. Lexi stood behind her and held out a long chunk of bleach blonde hair. Some of it real and some of it extensions. "Are you sure? It's going to be pretty short," Lexi said. "It's fine. It's not like I'm trying to attract a mate." Alex dropped her eyes and stared at her hands. An uncomfortable silence fell on the group and a sadness filled the air. Lexi continued to saw at pieces of hair. The blonde strands fell to the floor about her.

My fingers moved, straight to his face, shifting the white strands, tugging them backwards to reveal his thick black brow that sat calmly on that handsome face. I watched him. He was so handsome. Like—he should be, right? They all shared the same face, so they all were handsome. But like… this hair—it made him so different. As I watched, I couldn't help but wonder. This white hair of his—was it dyed? Bleached? I looked closely. There were no black roots. No sign of it at all. That could only mean that it wasn't dyed. Bleached, maybe? Suddenly—

She was standing outside my bedroom door, with a pie in her hand, and her mouth on the floor. "Mom, relax. I just bleached them a little," She stepped closer and began assessing my hair more carefully. "You had beautiful brown hair and now it's all... white. Like old people white," "It's called platinum blonde," "What did you do that for?" "Well, tomorrow's the first day back to school. I just feel like it's time for a little change..." My whole high school career had been somewhat... bland. Zero love life, no dramas, and no fights. That sounded peaceful, yes, but also very boring.
