The Rip
Gabe could feel the charge in the air, a prickle at his teeth, a taste like batteries.
“God is my strong one; in him will I trust,” Frank called, louder, unshaken. “My shield—”
The wave didn’t crash. It screamed.
It came down like a wall, a solid roar that swallowed Frank whole. Foam and red shot skyward, a violent, blooming spray. Gabe staggered, forearm over his eyes, ears ringing. When the water slid back, the beach was there, the tide was there—
Frank wasn’t.
A ribbon of crimson coils unspooled with the backwash, thin as a vein. It writhed in the receding foam and slipped away into the blue like it had been called home.
