The ship was hurled away from the Sun at a fraction of the speed of light, its salt-armor peeling away in glowing white flakes.
As they drifted back toward the cool darkness of the inner planets, Kael slumped in his chair, his skin returning to its human warmth. He looked at the Sun. It was still there-bright, steady, and clean.
"The lighthouse is gone," Lyra whispered, her gold-flecked eyes closing in exhaustion.
"But the Swarm heard the first signal," Kael reminded them, looking at the scanners.
On the edge of the system, a thousand Fold-Points began to open. The "Lighthouse" had been destroyed, but the "Guests" had already arrived.
