Morry, ever deadly, twirled her daggers absentmindedly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation and mischief. Then the agony began. My bones shifted, stretched, and cracked in ways that felt both terrifying and liberating. My blood burned like molten gold, coursing with a fire I had never known. And then I saw her. In the nearby lake, rippling like liquid crystal, was her reflection - my dragon. Wait, what? I have a dragon?!?!?!?!

“But if you would just be my friend, I’d appreciate it.” Figured that a fried would come in handy in this new world – especially if I had to navigate a world with forgotten gods and immortal family feuds. ~NORA~ I saw the black dragon again, its eyes burning with molten lava, its body covered in scales, its claws extended, and its jaws open wide. The dragon circled me, its massive wings sending gusts of wind that stirred up dust and leaves. Its eyes bore into mine, and I could feel the heat of its breath on my face. Suddenly, the dragon lunged forward, its claws extending more widely. I screamed as the dragon's razor-sharp claws plunged into my chest, piercing my heart, then ripping it out. I could feel the searing pain spreading through my body, and I knew I wasn't going to last.

My expectations of hefty magic tomes full of spells were quickly dashed. Laney’s idea of books was limited to fairy tales about princesses and knights and, of course, magic. Not exactly what I had in mind. As far as she was concerned, if it didn’t interest her, it didn’t exist. “This one’s really good,” she informed me, holding up a thin novel called Loved By Two Dragons. “He’s a dragon, but he’s also a handsome boy. But his brother’s even more handsome, and he’s an even bigger dragon!”

Feeling the air around here, I quickly felt cradled and relaxed. It was unexpected how fast this mystical place managed to ease my current troubles. With a couple of breathing exercises, I opened my eyes, and the dragon behind them never left its gaze on me. The feeling it gave me was like being read like an open book, which was a little unsettling, so I sighed and turned away.
