The room seemed to forget I existed, until Alina’s eyes locked onto mine. “Why are you staring, sister? You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Did you wish I’d died in that accident so you could keep living my life?” I watched, my lips shivering in realization. The baby is dead, and I'm to be blamed for it.” Her voice was louder than usual, probably because of the hurt she felt deep down.

I crawled up to the windowsill and lunged. By some miracle, I reached the tree. From there, I shimmied down to the ground and laid flat in the brush, waiting for my opening. I lowered my breathing to as shallow as I could. The guards, for now, appeared oblivious. As did Calvin, who I could hear rounding the corner. “Let them have the brat if they want. Now that I have Lillian, it hardly matters. All I have to do is keep her here until she is pregnant, then she can go wherever she wants.”

He had actually lost everything that was most important to him because of the madwoman. He was just about to speak when Lillian, as if recalling some buried memory, suddenly erupted into a piercing wail, thrashing wildly. "Help me, Daddy! Help me! Mommy is trying to kill me! Mommy wants to kill me!" Lillian's single outburst sent shockwaves through the ward. They had all assumed that the "Mommy" she cried out about was me, but that was no longer the case, as I was already dead.
