April wrapped a blanket around both of them, her own hands trembling.
“Ma’am, your arm—” April gasped. There was a small burn on Maya’s sleeve, the fabric darkened but not deep.
“I’m fine,” Maya rasped, brushing it off. Her focus was only on Elsie. “Are you okay, sweetheart?”
Elsie nodded weakly, still sobbing. “I—I thought I was going to die.”
“You’re safe now,” Maya whispered, smoothing the girl’s hair.
When the firefighters finally arrived, they quickly doused what was left of the blaze. Smoke curled into the afternoon sky, leaving behind a scorched smell that clung to everyone’s clothes.
