Being invisible hurt less than being hated.
“Can you believe this day is finally here?” someone whispered nearby.
“Grace was born for this,” another replied. “She fits him perfectly.”
I kept my gaze lowered, but the words still found me. They always did.
I shifted the tray in my hands, forcing myself to keep moving. If I stopped, if I allowed myself to feel too much, I might break in a way that could not be hidden.
Grace appeared moments later, stepping into the square like she belonged at its center. Her dress shimmered softly, hugging her figure, every detail carefully chosen. She looked radiant, untouched by fear or doubt.
