Her voice carried a hopeless certainty. “I won’t let that happen. I’ll find a way. You can’t die, Adriah,” I said firmly, setting the tray of food in front of her. She lifted her gaze, meeting mine. “Why are you doing this?” she asked. I shrugged. “I don’t know. But a part of me wants you to live. It’s like… it’s my purpose in life.” Her brows furrowed, clearly not understanding what I meant. I took a deep breath. “For the first time in my life, Adriah, I feel like I have a purpose. And it started the moment I first saw you.”

I could feel his shameless stares but I did not say anything. “Are you okay?” I paused. Am I okay? Yes! I am. When Dan was chasing me, I could only think of one thing. Survive. Surviving in spite of the great danger waiting for me. I know now that treasuring my own life is one of the most important things in this world. My daughter needs me. My patients need me. There are people who want me to survive in spite of the pain and suffering this world has given me. My dad, my daughter, Tyler, my aunt and uncle, my cousin, my patients. They all want me to survive. I still haven't fulfilled my purpose, that's why I should continue living.

I didn't want to be stuck in this life with people who only brought me pain. As I lay in bed that night, I couldn't help but think about Onix. The mere thought of having him made me feel hopeful and made me feel like I had a purpose. I knew I had to do whatever it took to keep him—to leave this place behind and start a new life.
