Lloyd X Kai Novels & Stories

I'm pretty new to the Lloyd and Kai side of things in 'Ninjago' myself, and finding a starting point felt overwhelming. A lot of the popular fics dive straight into complex AUs or heavy angst that assumes you're already deeply invested in their dynamic.

What worked for me was filtering for shorter, post-canon one-shots. There's a story called 'Embers in the Docks' on AO3 that's maybe 2k words. It's just them having a quiet conversation after a mission, with that classic bickering that slowly softens into something more understanding. No major alternate universe rules to learn, just the characters as you know them from the show, but with that extra layer of unspoken tension fans pick up on.

It's a great primer because it mirrors the slow shift from rivalry to partnership the series itself does, just turned up a notch. From there, the tags and bookmarks on that story led me to other authors who write in a similar, accessible style. I'd avoid anything labeled 'canon divergence' or 'soulmate AU' right off the bat—those are fantastic, but they're a second step. Stick to 'Fluff', 'Friendship', and 'Developing Relationship' tags to ease in. The community bookmarks are way more useful than just sorting by kudos when you're starting out.

The classic tension revolves around Lloyd’s ingrained need for order and duty versus Kai’s instinct for chaos and independence. You see it everywhere: Lloyd struggling with his Green Ninja destiny, feeling he has to be this perfect leader, while Kai is the one who’s like, ‘Screw destiny, live for yourself.’ That creates a beautiful push-pull. Is Lloyd’s sense of responsibility a cage, or is it what actually holds their dynamic together? Is Kai’s rebellion a breath of fresh air or a destabilizing force? A lot of fics dig into that.

Then there’s the whole ‘found family but now it’s weird’ angle. They were raised as brothers, sort of. Nya is Kai’s sister, and Lloyd is basically her honorary little brother too. So when feelings shift, it’s not just internal conflict—it’s ‘how do we tell Nya?’ or ‘does this betray the team?’ The guilt and fear of ruining the group dynamic is a massive emotional hurdle. I’ve read some that handle this really well, where the conflict isn’t just ‘do I like him,’ but ‘can I afford to like him?’

Another layer is self-worth. Lloyd often battles with not feeling like he’s lived up to his father’s legacy or his own hype, while Kai deals with feeling secondary, never the ‘chosen one.’ So sometimes their conflicts are these mirrored insecurities clashing. Kai might provoke Lloyd to get a reaction, to prove he sees the real person, not just the Green Ninja, and Lloyd might misinterpret that as disdain. It’s messy, but that’s what makes for good drama.

Okay, so I kind of have a controversial take on this one that's probably going to get me downvoted into oblivion, but I genuinely think a lot of the fanfic for this pairing kinda misses the forest for the trees. The canon dynamic is fascinating because it's mostly functional! Lloyd and Kai have settled into a 'snarky older brother/annoyingly competent little brother' rhythm by the later seasons, which is a lot harder to write than angst or romance. Too many fics default to 'Lloyd is sad about his dad and Kai is the only one who gets it,' which... I mean, Cole or Nya are right there for that? The more interesting tension I've seen explored well is legacy vs. self-made identity. Lloyd's burden is a destiny he never asked for, while Kai's fire came from a desperate choice to protect his sister. Their friendship works when a writer remembers Kai's deep-seated insecurity about not being 'special' enough, constantly clashing with Lloyd's desire to just be a normal guy who earned his place. The moments that ring true are when Lloyd seeks Kai out not for wisdom, but for his blunt, no-bullshit perspective that cuts through all the Chosen One noise.

I got really into this one longfic that was just them rebuilding the monastery roof after a storm, arguing the whole time about the best way to lay shingles. No world-ending threat, just two guys who have saved the universe multiple times but can't agree on basic carpentry. That felt real. The friendship is in the bickering and the unspoken trust that the other has your back when the hammer slips, not just in the big, dramatic declarations. Fics that lean into Kai's protective instincts without making Lloyd seem helpless are the ones that stick with me. Lloyd has to be the one to verbally smack some sense into Kai just as often, or the power balance feels off.
