The streets curved instead of running straight, the buildings leaned into history instead of away from it, and every so often the city parted just enough to let the river show through, like it was reminding you who had been here first.
There was something quietly ridiculous about it — two people walking side by side with no plan, no destination, and no discussion of either, as if this were the most efficient system we’d come up with.
“Are we going somewhere,” I asked after a while, “or are we just trusting the city’s decision-making process?”
He glanced at me. “I’ve found London tends to make better choices than people.”
“That feels like an insult delivered with data.”
“It is.”
