[And the second witness...] I quickly grabbed the following paper to see the name, but the page number glared at me: 21. The one I was reading was 19. There should be a page 20. I quickly shuffled through the rest of the stack, my hands shaking. There was no page 20. Not only that, there were a few other numbers missing as well. Clutching page 19, I quickly stood up.

I had just finished journal 3 when I stopped. “What am I doing?” I whispered and dropped the journal, “No, no, no. Please no. Stop.” I dropped to my knees and started to collect all the pages. In a frantic hurry, I picked up each page as if they were about to fade away. Pages had landed everywhere. On the bed, behind the cupboard, under the tables, even in the bathroom. I picked up 575 pages. Each journal was a book of 192 pages… which meant one page was missing.

Were those the missing pages? Did someone steal the pages so they wouldn’t know where to go?

“What?” Lila asked. He held up the metal fastener running through the papers. “There are gaps.” Vanessa leaned closer. “What do you mean?” “See these marks?” He pointed to tiny tears near the punched holes. “Someone removed pages.” Silence. Vanessa immediately checked the file index. Her eyes widened. “He’s right.” “There should be forty-three pages.” She counted the papers. “Thirty-eight.” Five pages were missing. Lila’s pulse quickened. “What kind of pages?”

The proposal was six pages. He was aware, as he wrote it, that six pages was not a long proposal. Alexander worked with documents that ran to three hundred pages and found things to mark in all of them. But six pages was the right length for this, because the argument was not complicated and the data was sufficient and padding it for the appearance of thoroughness would have been exactly the kind of move that Alexander would mark as a revision point. The argument was structured in four parts.

He reaches for another folder, then his phone rings. He looks at the screen. "I need to take this." "Business?" "Unfortunately." He stands. "I'll be back." "I'll survive." "I know you will." After he leaves, I continue sorting through the remaining files. Most of it is routine, nothing unusual until one folder feels thinner than it should. I frown. The pages are numbered. Page three, page four then page six. I blink. "Where's page five?" I flip through the folder again, slowly and more carefully this time. The paper between pages four and six has been torn out.

Elise did her best to disguise her discomfort over the fact that Nate Kimble was seated directly across from her. To his left was Lilith Bertram and to his right was the beautiful Melissa Jameson. Melissa recently came out and was actively searching for a union with an eligible man. Unlike the Pratts, the Jamesons considered Nate Kimble to be an excellent catch. Therefore, Melissa was working hard to gain his favor. Considering Lilith was on his opposite side and she was certain he wanted to avoid any and all conversation with her, it made sense that Nate would pour all his attention on Melissa. The fact that she was a beautiful green-eyed redhead only served to sweeten the situation.
