Various theories have the library being built there by aliens, by a civilization ten thousand years old, or by a race of vampires. Caitlin let the book fall from her lap, her mouth open in shock, and it landed with a thump on the floor. She sat straight up, feeling a jolt. She suddenly felt wide awake, as if she had just lost all sense of time and place. She picked the book up again, her throat dry, and read the words again and again, desperately, like a castaway starving for water.

It did not acknowledge our arrival. Adrian handed me one of the books. A novel, translated from French, about a woman who inherits a farmhouse in Provence and systematically dismantles her previous life. "It made me think of you," he said. I turned it over. Read the back. "Is she happy? At the end?" "I don't know. I haven't finished it." "That's not very encouraging." He smiled. "I thought you'd appreciate the honesty."

A stranger's kindness brought a trace of warmth back to my dead, disappointed heart. Perhaps this was the reason I was brought back in time. This chance allowed me to know the truth of everything that happened, and it also made me realize that this world was not just full of malicious people. After bidding Mary farewell, I followed the address to the apartment. I did not expect the lights to be on when I walked in. A soft and gentle voice greeted me. "Are you Joseph? Hi, I'm Wendy. I was cleaning the place up for you. Otherwise, there's no way you can sleep here tonight."

Damien was on the couch reading. "Done," she said. He looked up. "The neighbor," he said. "What you tend, you keep. What you leave, you lose twice." She sat beside him. "That's the chapter's last line." He was quiet for a moment. "Thomas lost twice," he said. "The house and the love for it." She paused. "In that order." "And the protagonist." "Is learning the difference between leaving and loss." She pulled her legs up. "They're not the same thing."

I gently closed the newspaper and threw it into the blazing fireplace in front of me. The tongues of fire instantly swallowed the paper, swallowing that name and that past soaked in blood and betrayal. "Nothing." I took a sip of coffee, warmth spreading through my body. "I just think the fire is warm tonight." Outside the window, snow was falling heavily, covering the world in white. And my story was just beginning. (The End)

Irina: ‘Oh yeah, that’s one of the best.’ I said and lifted a fork to my mouth. ‘Learn from it by heart, the book tells you about time and death and other things in between. It’ll tell you simple and priceless things in life,’ I added. ‘It goes like, we live not just to make a living but to really live life, and have no regrets when death comes to us,’ I said and put down the fork to the small white porcelain plate. ‘Morrie teaches us to love and be human.’
