Love Beyond Contract
I told her about Sabrina and Phill meeting me, about the salon, the hair color, the shopping, and by the time I mentioned the bangs, she gasped loudly enough to make me pull the phone from my ear.
“You got bangs?”
“I did.”
“Oh, this is serious. This is post-marriage rebirth behavior.”
I laughed again, and this time the sound came easier, fuller.
“I’m happy for you, babe,” Clara said more softly. “Really.”
I looked out the window. Evening had settled over Avelin in warm bands of fading gold. The trees beyond the house stirred gently in the breeze.
“Thank you,” I said.
And I meant it.
After we hung up, I sat for a while in the quiet, phone resting in my lap, thoughts moving slower now, softer.
