Instead, she fell to her knees beside me.
“You stubborn, reckless idiot,” she whispered.
“I know,” I choked out, laughing even as blood spilled from my lips. “But you’re alive. That’s what matters.”
“The twins—”
“Safe,” I said. “Because of you.”
She kissed my forehead, voice breaking. “Don’t you dare die.”
But I knew.
I’d made my peace.
Still, as the medics dragged me away, I whispered one last thing:
“Tell them I love them.”
Few minutes later, the twins stood beside their mother, hands clenched in tiny fists. The girl’s eyes glowed silver. The boy’s, violet. Energy pulsed from their skin like living thunder.
