I murmur, and Tali chuckles while scooping a zonked-out Koa off Fallon’s lap, but she is barely aware that all three boys have left, and she’s free of whatever Cathy had her doing tonight.
She sets down the book and scrubs her eyes, blinking into the darkness. The sun set an hour ago, painting the islands in deep shadows and the scent of ozone. Storms funnel all around Meridem tonight, and it’s not my doing.
She blearily peers up at me, taking me in, her sleepy eyes widening as she drinks in the fresh scratches on my arms and the bloody collar of my shirt.
“Do I want to know what happened?” she asks, then she yawns again, this time covering her mouth with her fingers.
