Then came the first shadow. It surged from the broken gutters like black smoke, curling into the shape of a man — faceless, eyeless, bleeding darkness from every limb. Behind it came more, slipping through alleyways and clawing up from shattered wells. The air turned sharp with the stench of sulfur and scorched bone. Demons. Not mindless ones... but hunters. The witches closed in, their laughter echoing like a chorus of nightmares. Something inside Aqua snapped. A surge of dark energy, unfamiliar and terrifying, welled up within her. She felt her pendant grow hot against her skin, the clear crystal turning black as smoke. The air around her crackled with raw power as she turned back towards the attackers, her fear morphing into a blinding rage.

The Blood Eclipse had begun. Lucian’s summons came before dawn. I found him on the lower grounds, already armored in dark leather and steel, his eyes glinting like cold fire. The hunters gathered behind him, a dozen wolves chosen for speed and skill. Their breath misted in the crimson light, shoulders taut, claws half-shifted. “We hunt before the eclipse peaks,” Lucian said, voice clipped. “If we move now, we might catch the Shadow Alpha’s scouts before they breach the border.”

Untreatable once it passed a certain stage. It described the people who used the blade. I turned back to Xavier. "They're called Shadow Hunters," I said. "They're not wolves. They're an old faction, older than most of the packs on this continent. They don't have sides. They hunt whoever they're paid to hunt, and once they mark a target, the target can't hide. The mark makes them trackable through any ward, any border." I kept my voice level. "Your scouts weren't killed by rogues. They were marked. Probably to send you a message."

A high-pitched whistle sliced through the humid air. Dozens of blow-darts, tipped not with tree-frog poison, but with condensed, liquid dark matter, rained down on us from the canopy. Killian didn't even flinch. His human silhouette flickered, instantly replaced by the thirteen-foot, obsidian mass of the Shadow Lycan. He didn't dodge the darts. He caught the air itself. A massive wave of gravitational shadow erupted from Killian's form, suspending the deadly darts mid-air, inches from my face. With a low, vibrating growl, he reversed the polarity. The darts shot back into the canopy a hundred times faster than they had been blown.
