My head shifts slightly, "Gather." Immediately the Black Death disentergrates into a cloud that rumbles like wind blowing past me and the shadow, whisking through the strands of my hair and robe, a deadly wind, but I stand still as it, even as with incredible speed it breaks out of the throne room, racing past the shadow of Shade who doesn't as much as blink as it storms past. It can not harm her.

“Shadows. At least twenty. No—more.” I moved forward. Through the archway, past the courtyard, in the distance— dark shapes were sliding between the trees. Not wolves. Not Ravagers. Something worse. Silas paled. “Those are Shades. Beasts of the First Realm. The moment the Thread cracked open, they slipped through.” Rowan’s voice dropped. “They’re heading straight for the stronghold.” “We can hold them,” Vaughn said, gripping his weapons. Silas shook his head. “Not for long.”

**Silas’s POV** The Shadow’s new form looms over me, a grotesque fusion of matted fur and glistening feathers. His violet eyes burn like twin pyres, and his talons—half claw, half bone—scrape against the tomb’s stone floor. The air reeks of decay, the Veil’s corrupted energy thickening until I can barely breathe. *“You should have knelt,”* the Shadow hisses, his voice a chorus of caws and snarls. *“Now you’ll die as your mother did—alone.”*

The thing was bigger than Zabdiel, with brown long fur that stood at the back of its neck, large long and sharp claws and fangs, and creepy silver eyes that glared at all of them. Black Shaol. These shadows can form into any kind of beast if they were released from their prison. Jucel screamed while the others scrambled to their feet. It caught Zabdiel's torso by its fangs and threw him to the wall on the other side.

One swift, it flew in our direction. I dodged the tree, but it didn’t fall on us. Zarah countered Dayana’s force and hurled the tree away. I’d never seen a hybrid lycan shift. Hearing my guys gasp, I turned to Shadow, now in her hybrid form. It was something I didn’t see every day. She was terrifying, but at the same time, I was proud to call her my friend. She ran faster in Dayana’s direction while she was distracted by Zarah. I shifted and followed her, too, but Shadow had already thrown her away before she could come close to Dayana. They were all forces to be reckoned with.

Not that it matters, since the small area means the shadow can’t get away. Kian’s teeth latch onto the shadow being, and he yanks, attempting to tear it away from Amora. The shadow hisses, wriggling in his grasp and squeezing tighter. A small, feeble squeak comes from Amora’s throat—the only sound she can make. Fury sends a wave of shadow smoke coming off my pitch black fur, and I lunge for the tendrils around her body. Snarls fill the air as Frost and Kian attack the shadow’s undulating form. I tear through the tendril wrapped around Amora’s neck, nicking her skin in the process, but the shadow being releases her with a startled, eerie scream.

And she can’t possibly tell them that she is ‘Shadow. In the underworld, Shadow is well known for being able to obtain information that even an influential person cannot. She is able to provide information about a needle in a haystack and its exact position. Aurora herself is just amazed by how capable her friend is.
