Rejected by One, Wanted by Another
Her cheeks hurt from smiling for cameras and guests for hours.
Her mother approached her slowly, holding little Leo’s hand. His tiny bow tie had shifted to the side, and his sleepy eyes were half closed. Lucy’s mother looked at her for a long moment, her face filled with both relief and sadness at the same time.
“It was beautiful, Lucy,” her mother said softly, her voice shaking a little. Her eyes dropped to the huge diamond ring sitting on Lucy’s finger. “You looked so beautiful tonight. Like a real princess.”
Lucy almost wanted to laugh at the word. A princess. She felt nothing like a princess. She felt empty inside.
