The butterflies in my belly flapped happily. “Thanks for saying yes.” He whispered against my lips. I kissed him, “you know there was no way I would have said no.” “It's still expected of me to ask.” He grinned. Sighing, I placed my head on his chest, letting him rock me slowly. My life didn't have to end awfully in the end. I have been reborn to take the place of my father, and fight for the eternal freedom of my people. I am the reborn Luna Kira and I have come to live.

She whispered to her reflection: “If they want me… they’re not ready for what happens next.” Because Sheraphina wasn’t the same fragile girl she’d been before rebirth. She had survived death once. She wouldn’t bow to the shadows now.

Yet he lies. That about sums it up. We lied to, I say, trying to find a way to decipher these emotions whirling inside me. We survived, she counters. Maybe he was, too. Curses, I know he was. And as I walked down the corridor, Selene’s screams behind me and Killian safe in his bed, I opened her phone again. I read Leo’s enthusiastic reply: Be there. Roderick shifted back and walked over to the rouge holding the little girl and snatched roughly out of his jaws, taking her flesh as he did, not caring she was crying and in agony. Within seconds my aura engulfed me and then slammed out of me. I howled with the enormous amount of engery and emotion it dispersed itself with. I was glowing and everything was glowing around me too forcing those in front of me to shift back into their human. My aura was a bold green the colour of life on this earth meaning I had be reborn into this body waiting for him to grow up and awaken me.

It wasn’t love, certainly not that, but it was something, and I hated it. I hated that my life had become so twisted, so complicated. I hated that the people I thought I could trust had betrayed me in the worst possible way. And I hated that, despite all of it, part of me still longed for things to go back to the way they were before. But I wasn’t that naive girl anymore. I couldn’t afford to be. I had made a vow to myself when I was reborn—to get revenge, to make Emerson and Lila pay for what they did to me. And I wasn’t about to let emotions or guilt or anything else get in the way of that.

Everyone froze. Even the moon itself seemed to hesitate. She stepped down, her eyes locking on me. “You are the Luna Reborn. The last of the blood star. And yet you fight like a child.” I steadied my stance, breathing hard. “I fight like someone who refuses to bow.” Her lips curved. “We don’t want your bow, Elara. We want your rise. I know for a fact that we did.” “How?” Then a child’s voice rang out in the hallway excitedly as Calix bounded inside with a wide grin that always made my day. My heart softened at the sight of him and I almost reached out when I remembered he wasn’t mine. And he likes Mira more than he likes me which should be the first evidence I need.

Jay lunged for my shoulder—my world tilted— A thunderous roar cut through the trees. “ENOUGH!” Don. His black wolf slammed into Jay with terrifying strength, sending him flying across the ground. Jewel tried to attack from behind—but I intercepted her, shoving her face-first into the dirt. My dagger pressed between her shoulder blades. Don shifted back to his human form, eyes ablaze. I wrapped my arms around my waist and began to shake violently from the extreme shock of the night. My lungs burned and my dislocated shoulder throbbed with a dull and sickening rhythm. A heavy thud sounded right next to me. Ajax dropped heavily onto the muddy ground and let his long legs sprawl out in front of him. The terrifying partial shift faded away and left him looking fully human again. His sharp claws retracted back into blunt fingernails and the glowing feral light vanished from his eyes. He rested his forearms on his knees and let his head hang forward while he took deep and ragged breaths.
