As the fire died down to embers and people began to drift off to their bedrolls, Lyra, who had been fighting sleep, crawled into Liora's lap.
"Mama," she murmured, her eyelids heavy. "The song is different now."
"How is it different, my star?"
"It's not just our song anymore," Lyra yawned. "It's the valley's song too. It learned the tune."
Liora held her daughter, looking out at the sleeping forms of their extended family, at the dark shapes of the thriving plants, at the stars beginning to pepper the sky above the valley.
The Hush was gone. The Iron Guard was a nightmare of the past. They had a home in the mountain and a purpose in the valley.
