The pylon twisted and collapsed, its magical core venting blue flame. Above them, the shimmering golden dome that protected the Spire flickered and died. "Shields are down!" Lucas yelled into the radio. "Alpha, the path is clear!" Ethan heard the call. He saw the golden barrier fall. He looked up at the floating obsidian rock of the Aether Spire. It hung five hundred feet in the air, accessible only by a narrow, winding causeway of floating stones. And at the top, illuminated by the sick green light of the Soul Ritual, he saw them.

Marcus activated the datacore, projecting a brilliant, three-dimensional holographic model of Earth into the center of the royal quarters. The projection showed the globe illuminated by four massive, glowing nexus points: the Frost-Spire Citadel in the arctic north, the Jade Dragon Spire in the eastern skies, the Sunless Sea Trench in the southern abyssal ocean, and the Lunar Vault Fortress orbiting above in space. Shimmering threads of golden celestial Aether, white frost-fire, dark void plasma, and abyssal water energy ran between the four nexus points, weaving a dense, impenetrable planetary matrix around the entire globe.

We crested the ridge just as the moon slipped behind a jagged wall of black volcanic rock, plunging the plateau into sudden darkness. "Hold," Kaelen's voice rumbled low across the wind, and the column stopped instantly. I scrambled up beside him on a projecting outcrop of ice, peering past the stone.
