She tried to look anxious and worried, but she couldn't stop the corners of her mouth from turning upward. I drifted behind them, following them back to the dim and humid prison. The iron door was wide open. An intense smell of blood and rot invaded their senses. Dad rushed in, but when he saw what was inside the cage, he was rooted to the floor. My body was curled up in a corner of the cage. It had already gone stiff, still in an extremely painful position. The rug under the cage was soaked in blood, and it had already turned dark brown. My fist was still tightly closed around the dirty piece of bread, which I never got to eat.

The silence enveloped me like a cloak, heavy and suffocating. Once I was certain the maid was gone, slowly I rose from the bed, reclining on the headboard. My hand groped the bed, searching for my phone. I squinted against the screen's brightness as I unlocked it, opening the voice messages. My finger hovered over the play button as my heart raced, unsure of what I would hear. With a shaking hand, I tapped play. Ryan's voice filled the room, hard and fast, sounding on the verge of insanity. My lips trembled as I pressed the phone further away, trying to distance myself from the fear and pain his voice evoked.

They only believed Rita's side of the story. I forced a smile. "Mamma, Papa, I didn't come here to argue." Mamma finally looked up at me with a wary gaze. "Then, why are you here?" "To give you a gift." I pulled a folder from my jacket pocket and handed it to Papa. Papa stared at the folder, as if he suspected it might explode.

Maybe all I need is exposure therapy.” He looked at her curiously, “Maybe… I’ve made a monster of her in my memory. I know this might sound crazy, but when she returns…. Can I stay with you two?”

Everyone knows me as a gentle and calm wife. On our wedding night, my husband, Julian Chapman, sleeps with another woman. To this day, no one knew why, because he went mute the moment the handcuffs clicked shut. His uncle, Mark Cavanagh—a rumored psychopath and Mafia Don—pled insanity for him. Instead of jail, Ben went to rehab.

The spilled contents made a mess out of the bed, but she was frozen with shock to care.
