THE MAFIA'S PRICE
“Come in.”
Sakura slipped inside carrying a lacquered tray, small porcelain bowls of steamed edamame, a few slices of perfectly ripe persimmon, a cup of warm ginger tea that steamed gently in the cool room. She set the tray on the low table with careful grace, then straightened and looked at me with those dark, perceptive eyes.
“I noticed you didn’t eat much at dinner,” she said in careful English, switching to Japanese when the words felt too clumsy. “The rice is simple, everyone likes rice. Is something wrong with the food? Or… with you?”
