“I’ll need more later.” She nods and turns back to the pot. Arin looks at me. Really looks at me. His eyes are too sharp for a kid his age. “They walk in circles,” he says. My chest tightens. “Who does?” Elara asks. Arin shrugs. “The mad feet.” I crouch in front of him. “What mad feet?” He presses his palm to the dirt. “They go round and round. Like this.” He drags his finger in a slow circle.

--- Later That Morning. Madeline, dressed in a robe, sat at her little couch, admiring herself in the mirror. She smiled. It had worked — just as she had planned. She took out her phone and made a quick call to a trusted friend, a photographer who had been on standby. The night before, the photographer had snapped several pictures of the two of them — taken at just the right moment to imply far more than a simple dinner. By the time Chester stumbled out of the guest bedroom, his head pounding and his body groggy, Madeline was already waiting.

Maddie moved to swing it open wider. It opened to reveal a cupboard. Maddie went to reach in for the golden box. She opened it to set the newest letter atop the others. The pile seemed to keep growing.

Miles replied, "Nope. I never had the nerve to take one. Sneaking a pic feels way too wrong." Mason said, "@Madame Lee, where’d you go again? I’m not sleeping tonight until we get the truth." Adora chuckled as she read, then stood and casually walked behind Louis. Click. Louis turned his head. “What are you doing?” “Nothing. Just helping you pick food.” She returned to her seat, pulled up the photo, and sent it to the group. Madame Lee said, "No front-facing shots, but here’s a little something from behind."

Darren explained. “Oh yes. That. I was so caught up in the whole mate introductions.” André quickly explained. “Amelia is a Gamma heir from Madonie who can see when magic is being used to catch you up. Darren had her identify the afflicted at the holding cells to use a potion Bisnonna made to counter it.”

She wore intense smokey eye makeup, her lips were painted a deep red, her hair had been permed, and her nails were meticulously done. Her face somewhat resembled the little girl in the photo. "Maddy, you're back." Sandra immediately ran out, drying her hands with a smile. Madeline glanced at the empty table and said arrogantly, "Do you know what time it is? Why isn't dinner ready yet? If I had known, I wouldn't have come back so early." Andrius could not help but frown at the girl's attitude. "Right away! Dinner will be ready right away!" Sandra responded humbly and pointed to Andrius, saying, "Come, let me introduce you. This is Mr. Moonshade. He came to offer his condolences.
