She simply sat at the funeral with both hands clasped over her stomach, slowly rocking back and forth in her chair.
No one could get her to respond, except her mother. Nazi was the only one who could sometimes make her drink a little water so that she would not faint.
Sara was buried in a nearby cemetery in the village. On the way home, Magdalena kept remembering their last conversation, when Sara had asked her, “Mom, will you be back soon?”
Only now did Magdalena realize that something had been troubling Sara and that she had been sad. She simply hadn’t paid attention to it at the time. She had been thinking about her own love affair instead.
