She looks at the card and a smile flashes across her face.
“Yes Sylvia, it’s your birthday my dear, you are turning twenty-two today.” I say. The others are already dancing to the music that has been put on, so our conversation is private.
“Wow, twenty-two? I thought I was maybe twenty or so. But I am glad I know my real age now.” she says, smiling. “Thank you, Maggie, for this, you didn’t have to, though. I have never celebrated so it isn't always a big deal for me.” Wow, really, she isn’t appreciating? I force a smile because I feel like burning inside. And she is calling me Maggie? I want her to call me mother, not in front of everyone but at least between the people who already knew.
