I was choosing me. That night, Maximus summoned me to the war room. Elena was there, her expression tight. Leif stood with his arms crossed near the map table and one eyebrow raised, as if he already knew I wouldn't like what was about to happen. Maximus stepped forward and held out something small and silver. A ring. Simple. Elegant. Lined with crescent symbols etched on the inside. "What is that?" I asked. “A seal,” he said. “Old magic. The kind that dies when bonds are tampered with. If Xavier tries to mark you forcefully… this makes it harder.”

I asked again, accentuating the last 3 words clearly. He handed me the letter where I could see the back of it. A golden stamped wax seal held the envelope closed. The seal was a beautiful intricate flower with a delicate full moon behind it. I ran my finger softly over the golden wax and I could feel my brows knit close in confusion. “Ipomoea Alba?” “The moonflower.” Shannon breathed behind me. “The Royal Seal.”

“The seal?” Killian turned to him sharply. “You didn’t say anything about a seal.” Riven’s jaw clenched. “Because we weren’t sure it still existed.” Aria slowly withdrew her hand from Killian’s and stepped farther into the room. The air felt thicker here, humming faintly—like a distant heartbeat under stone. “What kind of seal?” she asked. No one answered immediately. Then Elder Maelor spoke, his voice dry as ancient parchment. “The kind built to imprison something that refused to die.”

I cried. That's when I realized his touch was like a lightning bolt through my body. His eyes caught mine as I was about to ask what was going on when he mumbled one word "Mate." I only slightly nodded my head when he kissed me. I moaned against his kiss. He trailed kisses down my neck and stopped where he needed to bite me to start the mating process. Once he marked me no one would dare judge us or even think we weren't mated by the Goddess. His sharp canines grew and he bit. I yelped in pain but as soon as the pain started it had already finished.

Deagan laughed, wiping the slobber off his face. “Misterio… Mist, for short.” Deagan eyed her strangely. “That’s very different, any reason?” Hazel asked and Aria smiled at the grey-eyed cuteness. “Misterios means Secrets in Spanish.” Deagan caught on easily while others remained in the dark, no one asked her to elaborate. “Well then Mist, come meet your uncle Aycin.” Aycin held his hands out and so he made his way down the table, receiving rubs and kisses. “Little attention lover, isn’t he?” Aria laughed at Deagan’s words.

When he returned, he carried a sealed note, the parchment cream-colored and expensive, the kind used for formal correspondence. “From a messenger,” he said, but his expression was troubled. “No return address, but the seal…” I took the letter from his hands, my fingers recognizing the texture before my eyes registered the familiar crimson wax pressed with a sigil I had never hoped to see again. Selene's personal mark is the picture of a crescent moon punctured by a silver arrow. I broke the seal, my hands shaking a little as the wax cracked like ancient blood. Written in Selene's graceful calligraphy, which had formerly embellished love letters but now held threats, the letter was succinct.

I said, gesturing and trying to analyze. “This is bullshit. It is how this got to my desk some hours right immediately we locked the spy up. That’s what bothers me more than the message.” I held the envelope up again, turning it in the light, checking the seal again. Whoever sent this must be really smart. No scent. No crest. And the seal? A symbol I’d never seen before…circular, with three slashes through the center like claws. “I have never seen this stamp,” I said aloud, more to myself than to Kyle. Shaking the envelope in my hands.

Now she carried a leather-bound ledger. “I retrieved this from the elder vault,” she said softly. “Signed contracts. Sealed with Maelor’s crest.” Gasps broke through the air. Maelor surged to his feet. “Forgery!” Mira met his gaze without blinking. “You forget who taught me to read seals.” The tension snapped. Two of the younger council members stood abruptly, hands reaching for hidden blades. Kael moved faster. He did not draw his weapon. He simply stepped into their space, presence alone forcing them back.
