I took a deep breath and released it, trying to relax so I could feel my magic. I felt the familiar thrumming of energy within me, but it pulsed with an unusual weight tonight, reluctant to respond. I closed my eyes, focusing inward. The whispers of my magic grew louder, drowning out my thoughts, and I gritted my teeth, willing the magic to flow. "Please," I muttered, pouring my intention into the spell. I envisioned a warm light surrounding Aric, a protective barrier to break whatever held him there. But the magic remained stubborn, slow to react.

Energy swirled around her, shimmering and dancing in vibrant hues. "From fragments old and weathered too, With magic's touch, I bid you renew, Mend your brokenness, become anew, Form a chair, sturdy and true." As Freda's enchanting words hung in the air, the energy she had summoned coalesced around the broken pieces of wood. The fragments responded to the call of her magic, trembling and shifting in an otherworldly dance. The patterns of energy intertwined with the wood, knitting it back together with a newfound strength and purpose.

I shut my bedroom door with deliberate care and leaned my forehead against the wood for a brief, shameful second. Then I got to work. I reinforced my personal wards first. Quiet ones. Precision-crafted. Grounded to my own magic signature so they would not draw attention or provoke questions. I traced sigils along the doorframe, under the windowsill, and beneath the bed. Each line was exact. Each anchor placed with intention. Control layered on control. The magic resisted me. Not openly. Not violently. It slipped. Bent. Responded a fraction too slowly, as if distracted. I clenched my jaw and tried again, pushing more power into the weave, tightening the lattice until the air hummed faintly.

I say to her. She looks at Alpha Mayhem approaching us fast. She places a stone in my hand. "You will need this when we find Fallon. This will bring her back to you. It will take more than tea. It is my life force and my magic. When we find her, they will have started draining her magic. Do you know what will happen to a witch after their magic is drained?" Mother Anges asks me.

His perception of traditional magic was shaken. The spell Len selected for the idol turned out to be a protection spell. Len read the description that the spell would imbue the object with protective magic that wards off small to medium kinetic based attacks. He watched as the idol processed being imbued by small amount of flowing arcane energy. The eagle idol floated and vibrated reacting to the purple energy encasing it.

I snapped. Suddenly, it felt like my life was no longer my own. Everything around me just felt too unreal…like someone was just going to randomly burst out laughing while saying 'fooled you'! But when that didn't happen… "Witches are being that can use magic by drawing in the energy emitted by the earth and the sun." Maggie explained. "It is science at its purest form really. Using the energy around us to do certain work. The only difference is that we can use that energy outside our body. We can also change that energy into different forms. Like heat or cold. Other witches can use that energy to do a lot more. It all depends on the strength of the witch to absorb energy."

I exit the dungeon without another word. Levi and Ariana join me in researching Wiccan history. “Witches can have a variety of magical powers in addition to the ability to cast spells,” Ariana says while reading a dusty leatherbound manuscript. “What kind of powers does it mention,” I ask. “All kinds! Elemental variances having to do with earth, fire, wind, and water, as well as telekinesis, freezing time, premonition, astral projection, um…oh my moon goddess…” Levi and I stare at her, waiting for her to continue.

Said Tobias. “Says the one with the magic wands.” I muttered under my breath, but apparently, not low enough. “Sweetie, we don’t own magic wands.” Annabelle told us. “The Earth has an endless supply of energy, and we can borrow some of that and put it to good use. Conversion of energy, you must have read about it in school?” When we both nodded, she continued on. “That’s how real magic works. Anyways, just know that we’re mages and that the pendant will change colors when you’re near any danger. It’ll change to a bright red when someone with harmful intentions is approaching you but if it’s a bit on the bluish side, then it’s simply jealousy or anger, nothing to worry about.”

The magic wasn't inherently destructive. It was responsive to intention and emotion. During the fight, my intention had been chaos and protection. "As ready as I'll ever be." Queen Sage begins the invocation, her voice carrying the formal cadence of ancient magical practice. "We gather to heal what has been fractured, to restore what has been suppressed, to free what has been bound by fear and good intention." Magical energy begins building in the chamber, visible as faint silver light that dances between the crystals and herbs arranged around the circle. The sensation is gentle at first—warm, welcoming, like sinking into a perfectly heated bath. "The first barrier is superficial," Queen Sage observes, her hands moving in precise patterns above my chest. "Recent suppression, probably dating back only a few months."
