And behind him, standing on trembling legs, pale, blood-soaked, barely breathing but unmistakably alive was Kiara.

Her hand still gripped the dagger’s hilt, her eyes were shining with something fierce and ancient, something stronger than death.
“You,” Rowan whispered, voice cracking with something like fear. “You’re…supposed to…”
“Die?” Kiara rasped. “Not today.”
She ripped the dagger downward and Rowan’s scream tore the sky apart. Black lightning exploded from his chest as his body folded to the ground. He was dead, truly dead.
And with his death came a sound, a soft, fragile shatter, like glass breaking.
