“Everyone’s talking,” I muttered, my voice tight, defensive. “I didn’t feel like being part of the circus.”
For a moment, he didn’t say anything. He just leaned against the edge of the fountain, arms folded loosely across his chest, gaze fixed somewhere past me.
“Yeah,” he said finally. “I know what that’s like.”
Something in his tone—raw and unguarded—pulled my attention. “What?”
He let out a breath that sounded more like a laugh, but there was no humor in it. “Being the villain in everyone else’s story. Having your name on everyone’s lips, always twisted, always wrong. No matter what you do, you’re the monster. The outsider.”
