Just when I figured my plan had failed, I heard the familiar sound of a whistle. I shot up from the bed and quickly switched on both lights in the bedroom. The masked man entered, and I stubbornly turned my back to him, pretending to be upset. "Are you mad?" His body, hot as ever, pressed against me from behind, and he took my cold hand, warming it gently in his own. “I’ve been busy lately. That’s why I haven’t come to see you,” he said. I wasn’t even sure why I felt angry or why he felt the need to explain himself. It was all so ridiculous. He seemed to find it amusing, too, as he turned me around, trying to get a good look at me.

I didn’t want to go inside because I might attract unwanted attention. Fortunately, no one recognized me in my disguise. I wore shades and a shawl over my face, styled like a hat. “Okay, sweetie, I’ll wait here. Take your time,” I heard someone say. It was a man in his mid-30s talking to a young woman. They must be father and daughter. I glanced at them, but they wouldn’t notice me looking because of my glasses. Since my spot wasn’t in the way of people coming in and out, the man moved next to me. He looked me up and down, and I felt uneasy under his gaze for an unknown reason. I sighed and crossed my arms, turning away from him.

Francesa’s POV Two weeks later I adjusted the collar of my crisp black shirt, rolling my shoulders as I took in my reflection. The brown contacts dulled the intensity of my usual violet eyes, and the short, tousled wig completed the disguise. Dressed in a fitted suit with a masculine cut, I could pass for a man without question because of my athletic build. They won’t suspect a thing. And I couldn’t afford any more distractions. Especially not after that night.

Then he said softly, “Someone who knows what it means to be hunted.” The sincerity in his tone left her breathless. Fear and curiosity tangled inside her. Against all logic, she felt safer with him than she had in days. But the safety didn’t last. He tightened his grip on her hand again. “Trust me.” They sprinted through the maze of alleys until they reached the waterfront. Boats rocked gently against the pier, their ropes creaking in the tide. The man scanned quickly, then pulled her toward a weathered canoe tied loosely at the edge.

The more I looked into those disguises, the more it felt like ants crawling under my skin. All of those disguises had one thing in common—he had a habit of disguising himself as a middle-aged, frail man with a scar on his face that ran from the side of his cheek and ended up at the upper lip. When I turned the last page of the disguises, the next was the list of names, and that section held the names of 764 people. My hands stilled when I saw those names were of the people he killed. My hands went to my neck, a cold pit forming in my stomach as I stared at those until they blurred. I might be just another one of those names to him.

He smirked, almost enjoying the power he had over me. I froze, my entire body tensing at the mention of my male disguise. The name Perin echoed in my mind like a bell tolling in a dark, endless chamber. He knows. A wave of panic washed over me, but I tried to keep my breathing steady. I could feel my pulse hammering in my throat, my mind reeling as I wondered how much this man knew. The man slowly reached for the gag in my mouth, loosening it just enough to allow me to speak. "What do you want?" I managed to ask, my voice hoarse from the gag.

“Lick my feet!” She knelt on the ground and crawled towards the brown-eyed shoes, held, and stuck her tongue out. Licking his already shiny boots, this continued until the man had enough. He kicked her off and said, “Be here at exactly 6am tommorow morning if you don't want to be exposed.” “Is my disguise still apparent?” “Apparent?” he said. “Is my disguise still clear? Visible to the eye of others?” The brown eyed cleared his throat, “Just pray you don't bump into my father or the chief. Once you do, you and your bodyguard will be exposed and thrown into the tiger's cave.”
