“She cannot afford the tax on the box, let alone the stone,” a shrill voice cuts through the shop.
I do not turn around immediately. I close my eyes for one brief second, inhaling the scent of cheap rosewater and unearned arrogance.
Marcella.
She struts down the marble steps, three low-ranking pack girls trailing behind her like matching luggage. Her chin is held high, her lips painted a bloody, aggressive red.
“Salesgirl,” Marcella snaps, waving a manicured hand. “Take that piece away from them. If their cheap stink gets on the silver, the magic will fade.”
