The return from the Moon was not met with the parades and celebrations that usually followed a successful mission for the Solar Union. Instead, a heavy, clinical silence blanketed the Nightfang Citadel. The eight canisters of stolen Helium-3 sat in shielded containment vats, glowing with a soft, blue efficiency, but the data Kael had brought back was a far more volatile fuel.

across the 140 million miles of void. For a single, staggering minute, the three thousand Martians in the Valles Marineris tubes felt the "Heartbeat" of the Earth. They felt the "Labor" of Detroit, the "Grace" of the Pearl-Spires, and the "Cold-Standard" of the falling violet rain. They felt the "Complexity" that their "Clean-Slate" protocol was designed to erase. The "Solar-Mirrors" de-activated. The "predatory sun" in the sky faded back into a cluster of harmless, silver dots.

-ADRIAN POV- I've built my career on the principle that control is everything. It's the only thing that separates the people who succeed from the people who get swept away by circumstance and emotion. Control is knowing exactly what will happen before it happens. Control is building systems that work regardless of external chaos. Control is keeping the world at arm's length so nothing can touch what I've carefully constructed. And I'm very, very good at control. Which is why the assignment Marcus just handed me is simultaneously the most strategic opportunity of my career and the most genuinely irritating thing that's happened to me in months.

Mara went still. It wasn’t reacting tactically. It was redesigning approach mechanics. In the northern territories, the wolves became restless again. Not with excitement this time. With unease. Lira approached Mara at dusk. “It feels farther away,” she said. “What does?” “The stars.” Mara tilted her head slightly. I hesitated for a moment, then hit play. “Hi, Grandpa! This is me, Elliot!” The boy waved at the camera, laughing. “I saw Mars last night, it was so cool! I wrote a report about it like you said I should. Mummy helped me with some of the terminologies. I find it fascinating that it has two moons and they have really cool names! Phobos and Deimos. Those names also double as Greek gods. Crazy right?” He chuckled to himself, like he had just told an inside joke before rubbing at his eyes.

CHAPTER FOUR Eric walked down the passage which had black tiles on its floor and up the walls; doors on his left and right as he walked passed; each door had a tag. He walked past a door labelled Saturn, another Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury. The doors were labelled with planets of the solar system except Earth; they were not labelled for figurative purpose because each door actually leads to the planets mentioned; those doors were known as “Dimensional Gates”.
