his voice came again. Before I could force the word out, my body was brutally folded beneath him like a broken doll—my knees crushed against my shoulders, my spine curled into an arc, my neck twisted at a painful angle I never imagined possible. Inside, nestled in a glass terrarium, was Nero—my Chilean rose tarantula. Big, black-legged, slow-moving. My eight-legged little enforcer. Luca brought it to me and Adelina shifted when I took Nero out, and put him on my palm. “What the fuck is that,” she whispered, voice starting to tremble.

A massive, mutated spider the size of a dinner plate had dropped from the ceiling onto Valen’s shoulder. I couldn't swing. I was too far away. "No!" I yelled. Valen didn't scream. He looked at the spider. The spider raised its fangs, dripping with black venom. Valen’s eyes flared gold. He didn't pull. He pushed. He opened his mouth and bit the air in front of him. CRUNCH. A sound like a thunderclap inside a jar. The spider didn't explode. It imploded. It crumpled inward, as if a giant invisible hand had crushed it into a singularity. Then, a stream of blue light shot from the crushed carcass into Valen’s mouth.

When I do, the pain returns tenfold to my wounds, and I fall in a heap on the ground. Marvel’s magic and his desire to keep me safe must have prevented the wounds from manifesting into being life-threatening. He looks like he’s trying to breathe through his mouth and not his nose, leaving me to assume he finds the scent off-putting, too. Tasha nods. “It’s not exactly the same, but it’s similar enough that whatever they’re from are definitely the same species if not the same…things.” She says “things” in a tone that projects both disgust and bewilderment. “Alpha!” I hear Channing call as he approaches with Blake and Serafina. It takes just a moment before I realize he’s carrying a human over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry. “Who do you have there, Channing?” I ask, feeling my mouth go dry and the sensation of my stomach dropping, fearing the answer.

The spider was black with dark brown hair like a tarantula and the woman had fair and white skin with black hair. Her black hair reached her waist and she had eight eyes on her face, two of them normal human eyes with red irises and the other six were red semispheres placed around her main eyes. The spider’s head had the same feature only that they were all red semispheres. In short, it was a mixture of beauty and monstrosity in one body with it going more on the monster side.
