Several guilty faces immediately looked away.
"I think they've tried that before," Finn chuckled.
"Oh, they definitely have."
One by one, the children accepted their sweets with bright smiles and enthusiastic thank-yous, and within minutes the basket was empty. A little girl with two messy braids stopped in front of Pearl, studying her with open curiosity.
"Were you really in the mountains?"
"I was," Pearl said, smiling.
"Were you scared?"
She thought about the question. "Sometimes."
The girl frowned. "My father says brave people aren't scared."
