I could barely get the words out. “You don't want to look at me,” he said. “Why is that?” I shrugged. “It's not like that.” “Why?” he asked, moving forward. I took a few steps back, my heart pounding like a drum. “Because I make you uncomfortable?” I stared at him, trying to keep my face unreadable. It wasn’t a question, but a statement. I crossed my arms. “I’m mated to your brother. This is inappropriate.” He tilted his head slightly. “He marked you, Stacey. You're not mated.”

This is all thanks to you young master. I folded my two hands over my stomach and bowed a full 90 degrees. When my head came back up, Alpha Damien’s expression was incredulous. Stop it with that young master crap. Hearing it makes me cringe, he said. But isn’t that what one calls a brother-in-law? I spoke in the manner a granddaughter-in-law would approach a grandmother-in-law. That title will only ring true if you do eventually end up dirtying my brother’s good family name by marrying into the family. As of right now, you are not my sister in law, he spat back.

I woke to sunlight streaming through the curtains and the sound of Killian moving around in the kitchen preparing what smelled like breakfast, and for a brief moment I allowed myself to simply enjoy the domestic normalcy of waking up in his bed before reality came crashing back and I remembered that today was the day of the mating ceremony. My entire body felt different somehow like the physical intimacy we had shared last night had fundamentally changed something at a cellular level, and when I reached for the mate bond I could feel that it was stronger and more vibrant than it had been before.

“I don’t know her, mum…” I freeze immediately. “Mum?” I almost stagger back but tighten my grip on the rail to find my balance. Brandon is Warrick’s brother — he is my brother-in-law. Oh God. How the fuck is everything in here so damn complicated? How can Brandon be my brother-in-law? “Adams, what were you saying again?” Quinn turns to him. “Did you make mention of a wife?” “Yes, ma’am,” Adams says politely. “She is Mr. Harrington’s old lady.”

"...Damn you, Sovereigns." The words escaped under her breath before she could stop them. Two days. It had taken nearly two full days for the scrape on her arm from the garden wall to disappear. It hadn't even been that deep. Meanwhile, these two had practically beaten each other senseless, and their bodies had already decided they were done being injured. She folded her arms, unable to hide the small frown forming on her face. "That's just unfair," she muttered quietly. Neither brother heard her. Or perhaps they simply pretended they hadn't.

He had already tensed behind me but was rubbing circles in my hand that he was holding. "I feel a little crazy to be honest," I felt him tighten around me a bit, "I feel like I've been so consumed with your brothers, so consumed with you, I don't even know what's left of my old life. I miss seeing Dez more, I miss Lilly, Savannah, and Nathan. I'm still mad at myself for believing I was friends with Connor, and I don't know how to tell anyone about all of you. They won't understand what mates are and how it works between us, I don't even understand it, they are just gonna think we are in some weird reverse cult where I have brother husbands," he snorted and was laughing at that, and I laughed

I held my breath as I waited for the answer. How messed up would that be? I rejected my mate for his sister's mate. What were the odds that Victor and I would be mated to siblings? But, it wasn't completely abnormal. Aunt Cassy was mated to Uncle Gino and he was the brother of mom's mate that passed on. That entire situation was almost as messed up as this. Whoever was up there busy writing the scripts of our lives clearly had a warped sense of humor.

My dad shook his head and pointed a warning finger at me, “You know I don’t do well with expensive jokes.” The whole announcement was looking even more difficult. He thought this was a joke? I sighed and looked at my brothers. But he seemed unbothered, it was as if I was alone in the situation. “I demand that you speak reasonably. What did you say about the mate bond?” he asked, spreading out his arms on the sofa. I swallowed, “my brothers and I are mated to Ashley. We found out through the mate bond.” My dad turned to Ashley’s mum, “Did you hear that?”

But I guess it was too late. Her brows pinched, "What? What do you mean by that?" She asked, almost breathless. I sighed, rubbing the bridge of my nose, then looked her dead in the eye. “Your big brother has made a career out of frustrating every shot you take at happiness. Tell me, what makes you think he won’t scoop this one off your plate before you even get a proper sniff of it?” Her smile broke, the shine in her eyes flickering, and I leaned back, satisfied.
