he replied I sighed, “Of course you do.” He stood beside the door, “You did well today.” Matthew said. I looked at him, “That sounds like another compliment.” “Don't make it a habit.” He said. I almost smile. Then his expression changed, “Rachel.” The seriousness in his voice made me straighten, “What?” I asked. Before he could answer, Antonio’s voice came through the communication system, “Matthew, we decoded the device.” The room went still, Matthew looked at his phone screen as it came on, a video appeared “Rachel Raphael, you’re searching for the truth, but you still don’t understand what your mother left behind.”

Lorenzo looked toward her. “What happens if the bells stop ringing?” She answered without taking her eyes off the glowing water. “The ritual fails.” Silence. “And if the ritual fails…” “…the Archive dies.” ⸻ Matteo immediately grabbed his radio. “The helicopter.” “It’s ready.” Alessio didn’t answer. His silver eye had begun glowing faintly once again. Fragments of memory continued flooding through his mind. He saw faces he had never met. Wars fought centuries apart. Kings crowned beneath the same cathedral.

"You two look like you’ve been chewing on something sour. More bad news?" I exchange a quick look with Lara, then shake my head. Mateo continues. "And what did Roman say about the poem on the scroll I found?" The scroll that he conveniently found. I shrug. "Nothing meaningful. We're just trying to figure out the rat working with Lara's parents." Mateo whistles low. "Heavy stuff. Any leads?" Every fiber of me wants to say Your name just came up. But the words choke in my throat. Instead, I watch him closely. He didn't reek of guilt. Calm eyes, steady hands, even breathing. But what he's just that good of a liar?

As I glanced at the screen, it was a call from an Unknown Caller. I hesitated, then answered. “Who is this?” There was silence at first. Then… a low chuckle. “Matteo Romenetti. I believe we have something in common.” I straightened. The voice wasn't familiar, so it was difficult to place who it was talking. But whoever this was, he wasn’t calling by mistake. “I don’t play guessing games. Speak.” “Let’s not pretend you don’t know who you’re hunting, Matteo. The detective… the little lamb you lost. I’m afraid she stumbled into something much bigger than your little empire.”

I muttered under my breath while Damien, Kyle, and Rowan walked a few paces ahead of me back to the packhouse. It was yet another failed search for what I was sure was the leader of the raven howl. Matthias was smart , too smart. Most days it felt like a wild goose chase. We’d reach locations similar to the ones camellia described only to find it abandoned, the air still warm from where he’d been, and a fucking stupid note left behind like he was mocking us. The bastard made a game out of it. I hated that I didn’t have a full view of his face, that all I had was the description of mismatched eyes. It felt like searching for a ghost with nothing but a riddle to go by.

Raffaele took a deep breath, his expression grave as he recounted the events that had led to his discovery. “I found it strange how Matteo always seemed to know what was happening with you and the children,” he began. “At first, I assumed he was just being protective. Vigilant.” He paused, holding my gaze. “But then I noticed he was always around at the right time. Too precise. Even when no one else realized something was wrong. That’s when I decided to dig deeper. And what I found…” His jaw tightened. “It felt like he was orchestrating everything from behind the scenes just to appear like the hero.”

He was in the study of the penthouse, focused on the name Connor had finally uncovered after hours of sifting through Dante’s past contacts. Matteo Ricci. The name sparked no recognition. There were no records of him being part of Dante’s inner circle. No ties to the Rossi family or any criminal history. It was as if he had never existed. Which made him even more dangerous. Adrian pushed back from the desk and returned to the main room where Leila and Luca waited. “The name is Matteo Ricci.” Luca frowned. “Never heard of him.” “That’s the issue.” Adrian handed him the file. “No records, no trace—nothing. He’s a ghost.”

“Aw, I know lovey, leaving your friends behind is hard, isn’t it?” Then she’s gone again. Rafael’s arm twitches. “Ow! Fuck!” Matteo hisses and he starts to rub his leg. “What’s wrong?” I ask, speaking for the first time. “My leg. Feels like a muscle cramp.” “Hm,” Rafael says and finally puts his right hand on the table. It’s empty. “That would be the ricin.” “The what?” Matteo asks.
