"Wait for me by the cafe fountain, okay? I'll be two minutes." "Sure," I smiled, stepping toward the large, cascading water feature in the center of the plaza. The mist from the fountain felt cool against my skin. I took a deep breath, telling myself that I was safe. The world hadn't ended. I was just a normal girl with a wealthy brother, shopping on a Tuesday afternoon. Then, I heard Mark’s voice call out from a distance. "Hey! Man, what a coincidence! What are you doing here?" I turned casually, expecting to see Mark chatting with a business associate. I watched Mark jog up to a tall man who had been walking out of a bookstore, clapping him warmly on the shoulder.

"I'll get the water. You go sit by the fountain near the garden path. I'll meet you there in two minutes." I nodded and slipped away, weaving through the crowd until I reached the quieter area behind the tent. I sat on the edge of the stone fountain, letting the sound of the water drown out the distant cheers of the match. "It’s a lovely dress, Aria. Really. It’s such a shame it’s wasted on a girl with no future." I froze. I didn't even have to turn around to know who it was.
