It is the only way to keep them from crossing paths. “Okay,” I say finally. “What time?” “I can come pick you up,” Romeo offers, but I shake my head even though he cannot see me. “No, let us meet at our usual spot,” I say, forcing a laugh to cover my nervousness. Our usual spot is the waterfall, a quiet place where we can talk without being interrupted. It is where we always go before heading anywhere else. Romeo chuckles, his voice deep and warm. “Sure. See you tonight.”

In the end, I sent a reply. ‘Central Park, by the fountain’ ********* She was already there by the time I arrived, holding a cup of coffee. I was ten minutes late and if we were on good terms, she would have chastised me for that. Instead, she said,“Thank you for meeting me” I sat beside her on the bench and avoided her gaze, keeping my eyes on the fountain, watching tourists and kids walk around the park. “Do you want coffee? There's a cart over there. I can…..”

For a moment, at least, the weight on my chest felt lighter. “You should sleep,” she said once she caught her breath. “Tomorrow will be another long day.” I nodded. She climbed into her bed, and I went to take a quick shower. By the time I came out, my body was begging for rest. I was just about to lie down when my phone buzzed. A message. "Meet me at the east garden fountain." It was from Elliot.

Somehow, the air feels charged and I have to break away. “I need to get going now. Rosalie, Amanda and I are supposed to meet at the school fountain at exactly two twenty,” I said to him. Todd smirked and tugged at my nose. “And you have to be there twenty minutes before, punctual as ever,” he finished. My cheeks heated. “It’s always better to be earlier than on time,” I defended, squaring my shoulders as I turned my face so that Todd’s hand dropped to his side. I missed his warmth on my face but I felt relieved because I could see some girls stealing glances at us.
