Mag-log inOrlena’s POV
Joan twisted her lips. Her face curled into something that felt like a mere performance.
The air in the room stood still.
I watched her walk past me like I was a piece of furniture. Like the six years I had spent with Brent and taking care of Eli meant nothing.
She handed one paper cup of coffee to Brent. Her fingers brushed intentionally, sending a signal.
Not once had she ever offered me anything. Not that I wanted anything from her. But just a reminder that she shouldn't barge into a space that she had abandoned for years.
A space that someone had spent six years of her life putting together when she left and disappeared into oblivion.
“Eli, looks peaceful,” she said, as I watched her locate a chair beside Brent like she belonged here. She sipped her coffee, with one eye, the other projecting on me.
“You should rest, Brent. This is having a toll on you."
I watched her place her fingers on Brent's neck. Feeling his body temperature like she cares right in front of me.
Brent ran a hand through his hair. "I’m fine.”
“You are not,” Joan's voice dropped, with a concerned voice like she always cares. "Let me stay with him tonight."
What did I just hear now? Joan staying with Eli?
My head twisted to both of them from where I stood.
No… no…. This can't happen. Brent wouldn't allow this.
Then a prolonged silence.
Brent nodded, “Maybe you are right."
Something cracked him. I knew it stupid fool. I knew you would give in.
"Orlena would stand in the gap… for you tomorrow."
Me standing in a gap? That's all you have to say?
My blood boiled within my flesh. I wanted to flinch. Launched towards Brent, for being so stupid and indecisive, and telling him to his face that I am not a placeholder.
Maybe he should have allowed me to go. When I said I wanted to leave. So why the earlier convincing and begging that Eli loved to see me around?
Calm down.
A voice warned me. If not for anything, do it for Eli. For that seed in your stomach.
I squeezed the tip of my skirt. The fabric glued to my sweaty palm.
I turned away, pretending I was no longer in the room, watching life outside through the window, streaming by, forgetting that someone was choking behind it.
My phone buzzed again. I reached for it in my pocket. My heart was pounding fast.
“Leave now. Or everyone finds out.”
My body temperature rose. My breath piqued.
I looked at the message for the umpteenth time. The words laced with threat swarm before my eyes. My thumb trembled, hovering on the screen.
Then I typed: “Who is this?”
Sent. Tiny beads of sweat formed on my nose. I quickly wiped it off with my backhand. I narrowed my vision to my phone screen, waiting for the reply of my life.
Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Then, appeared again.
Look out the window.
That was the message.
My eyes flickered on the message. My blood turned ice.
Every part of me screams not to look outside, to stay still and focus on my phone like I haven't read the message. My other body part betrayed me. My head turned towards the window.
Then, the hospital parking lot sprawled beneath. Cars scattered like a toddler's toy beneath me. A few nurses huddled at the entrance door, and I could spot an ambulance near the emergency bay.
Then close to it. I spotted a figure. Hidden between two packed SUVs like a ghost in the shadow.
His hood was pulled low. Face obscured. Arms crossed like he had been waiting for a long time.
I couldn't tell if he was more than one. But I could only spot him from where he had hidden.
Then he looked, directing his vision at my window.
I stumbled back. My shoulder slammed against the wall. The phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor, clattering.
“Orlena!”
Brent's voice erupted behind me, but it was distant like he was calling me from under the water.
I was physically in the room. But the other part of me had disappeared, to where I didn't know.
I couldn't answer. I couldn't breathe. I held my hand to my chest like death had found its entrance into the room. My heart slammed against my ribcage like a caged bird.
“Orlena!” Brent flinched from where he sat. He drifted towards me. " What is it, young woman!”
He looked outside through the window. Nothing changed the gaze back toward me.
I blinked severally but the figure was gone. The empty spaces between the SUVs were obvious and apparent, as if a stalker wasn't there.
My body shook and trembled nervously. My eyes widened apart. Like someone who had suddenly seen a ghost.
“What is wrong?" Brent stood in front of me, still scanning my face. Searching for an answer. “ You are pale. Your hands are shaking. What is wrong?”
“I'm…” I swallowed hard. Trying to look for the best narrative, I tried my best to meet his gaze. “ I'm fine, I am just thinking about my father.”
That was a perfect lie. It landed well in the room.
Something flickered on Brent's face.
Emotion? Pity? Something I couldn't put together.
Joan's composure changed instantly.
Hissing reigned in the air.
Jealousy or something I couldn't name plastered across her face. She changed her gaze to Eli, like she was no longer in the room with us.
"Your dad?!"
Brent asked. “What happened to him?!”
My breath squeezed tight.
I couldn't tell the news I got about my father's demise.
Joan's POV A Day Earlier “I hate the excuses you are giving me, Henry…” My voice came out low as I held the phone to my left ear. “The procurement is going on, and the construction is taking shape…” Mr. Henry uttered, his voice shaking over the phone. “The engineers aren't resting either. We need patience…” “Patience…” The word erupted from my lips. “That has been the song you have been singing…” I tightened my grip on the phone, my voice becoming thinner at the edge. “Listen, I will not take any excuse from you. By this time tomorrow…” “What about the…” I cut the call before he could utter another statement that would infuriate me further. “God.” The word erupted from my lips. I dropped the phone onto the couch where I sat and stood up quickly. I clenched my jaw. My fingers balled into fists. “That incompetent fool…” I echoed under my breath, anger erupting inside me. “I knew what he wanted to say next…” The Cayman Islands deal? “That is not my issue now,” I muttered. “
Zero's POV.“Grr… Grr…”I looked down at my phone. This made it the tenth time my phone had buzzed…Kenan, my boss… sorry, my fixer for Mr. Caldwell's lady, had been calling.I leaned back into the chair, my cigarette hanging between my fingers.I tapped it against the small metallic tray in front of me.Birds chirped above. I was in the woods. I had lived in the woods since I got back from jail…I had returned to this town to get my revenge on the Caldwells. My phone buzzed in front of me like it had been doing for the past few hours. I knew the lady had called Kenan to call me to order, but when it comes to anyone or anything that deals with the Caldwells, I just don't know how to hold back. I'm always ruthless. It was a message from my fixer, Mr. Kenan. It reads. Stay away from the woman. Deal with the family alone. You have the job… You have your cut… I had mine too… Deal closed. The words stared back at me from my phone screen. This made it the fifth time in the last few hou
Orlena's POV“Margarita!” The word crashed into Greg. Suddenly, everything in the room resonated as if an earthquake had passed through the floor, dividing it into parts.Greg's face and the nurse's exchanged glances. My mouth parted slightly. I didn't have a single ounce of energy to close it into a thin line. The door shut behind her. She walked quietly into the room like everything beneath her feet was made of glass, fragile and couldn't afford to break, closing the distance between Greg and me…“You guys know each other?” The words rolled off my lips without permission. My forefinger darted in the air between the two of them. My eyes moved between them, demanding answers. The nurse's mouth parted as she looked around the room. Probably thinking something adults do when they are alone had taken place between Greg and me. Greg wasn't left out either. He was stunned too. She didn't allow that silence to last long before she suddenly snapped.“I knew it!” The nurse roared like a r
Orlena’s POV“It’s time for you to be discharged,” Dr. Jackson’s voice echoed through the room, a clipboard pressed against his chest. My body lay on the almost flattened foam they called a mattress. It felt as though I had been sleeping on a plank. Pain surged through my spine, spreading into every part of my body.“Now?” My voice cracked, strained at every word.“Nurse Margarita,” Dr. Jackson called. “Hand over the phone.”“We can’t afford to allow you to stay one more day.” I watched him collect the phone from the young nurse, who was looking at me as though she wished I would disappear. “I guess it’s high time you started calling people you know who may come and help you out of here.”“I don’t have anyone in this city,” I replied, each word coming out in painful bursts. “Why are you being so wicked? I just had surgery two days ago, and you people are forcing me out without proper recovery.”“We are sorry,” the doctor replied with a hard smile. “There is nothing we can do about tha
Joan's POV.Fuck! The word erupted from my lips.I banged the table in front of me.I knew it!" I groaned, squeezing my fingers into a ball.I saw it coming!" I stood from my table. The legs of my shoes scraped the floor. My phone lit up in front of me.I prayed for today to disappear and never show up in my life again.Just a moment ago, Brent had disgraced me in front of the world. In front of all the company staff.I felt like I had been stripped naked in the middle of the road. While I was still nursing that humiliation, Zero showed up.I walked around my office, my brain throbbing inside my skull like it was about to explode. Then the door creaked open behind me. I didn't turn."Ma'am, can I bring the documents now?" my PA's voice echoed behind me."Get the hell out of here now!" I snapped, turning to her and pointing my hand at her like a dagger ready to part her from the rest of her body."I... I'm s...sorry...""Just get out. Now! Just go!""Okay, Miss Joan." She turned and wa
Zero's POV.Roughly a few hours earlier.Ding dong! The elevator door opened. My solicitor was the first to step out into the lobby, his shoes clicking hard against the marble like he owned the building. He caught my eye and crossed the floor in three long strides, jaw tight, tie already loosened."We'll meet in court," he said, gripping my hand a beat too long. His face had gone reddish, a vein ticking at his temple. "They think we're playing here. One hundred million dollars or nothing. And when the child turns ten, the father takes over custody. Sole parent alive."I didn't say anything. I just smiled, slow and easy, the kind of smile that makes lawyers nervous. I turned toward the automatic pedestrian gate, my shoes silent on the tile."Can I offer you a ride?" he called after me.I didn't turn around. I lifted one hand and waved, smiling with just my mouth, nothing behind the eyes.I shoved my hands into my hoodie pocket, hunched my shoulders, and tucked my chin toward the ground
Orlena’s POVI had just six months left until the end of my six year contract marriage with Brent Caldwell, the billionaire I agreed to marry under the condition that there would be no love or pregnancy.“Congratulations Mrs Caldwell,” the doctor’s gentle voice echoed in her warm office.“You’re 7
Orlena’s POV. “Little gift?” The word parted my lips, “I think you're mixing it up somewhere.” I let out a hard smile. The sound came out brittle, like I was crushing a dry leaf under my foot. “Was I?” “Yeah,” I replied, nodding. At this time, the smile had dissolved into something I coul
Orlena's POV He would snap at any moment now, I could feel it coming, and my hand tightened at my side as I stood there, watching him.“Why is this here?”He finally looked up at me, his brows pulled together as he held the paper in his hand.“How is this here? You realize how important this is?”
Orlena's POV I couldn’t stand the situation anymore and I just turned to continue what I was doing, even though my hands didn’t feel steady and my chest still felt tight. There was a bigger issue in my life now, something I could not ignore no matter how much I wanted to, and I needed to find a s
