Richard frowned. “I didn’t know about that,” he said slowly, turning to Melanie. “You never told me.”
Melanie opened her mouth, then closed it again. She looked away. Xavier’s mom noticed everything. Her eyes narrowed slightly, not in anger, but in disappointment.
She then turned to me. “Darla,” she said gently, “tell me what happened between you and Richard.”
I swallowed, my throat suddenly dry. But I lifted my head and spoke anyway. “Richard and I were engaged,” I said. “We were supposed to get married. But he left me for Melanie.” I paused, then added quietly, “She’s my cousin.”
