I hear our men roar in unison before storming in with me. As we walk deeper into the building, the scent of blood infiltrates my nostrils, and I instantly recognize them as Meredith’s. I did not know how, but I just knew it was hers. The second we turn a corner, my blood runs cold at the sight before me. Meredith is lying in Reid’s arms with her throat slit wide open. Her eyes lock with mine, and the corners of her lips lock by just a fraction. And then I watched her spirit leave her soul.

“Meredith, you’re the one bringing trouble upon yourself that you’re now faced with such an ending.” “...” After she finished saying that, the conjugal room plunged into silence. Meredith was speechless and dumbfounded. After Madeline’s invulnerable condemnations and questionings, Meredith’s face looked like a neon light. The colors on her face changed continuously. In the end, the light went out and her face was pale and lifeless. She looked like she was in the doldrums and had wilted completely. “How is this possible… That b*tch Madeline is already dead. Impossible. I disfigured her. Your skin can’t have recovered so perfectly. It’s impossible…”

Her blindness was made obvious by her action and it made her appear pitiful to any onlooker. Truth be told, the Grae’s current act of display could easily pass off as welcoming if only not because of their empty eye socket that left a gaping hole of horror in their face. Meanwhile, seemingly oblivious of her nightmarish appearance, the friendly Grae even put an effort into forcing a smile out from her sewn-shut mouth. “By the way, my name is Meredith and those two behind me are my sisters, Ariel and Steffi.” She introduced herself to the group and even though she lacked eyes, it still looked like she was staring back at Audrey while she was talking.

Meredith I waited in the east family room after Kieran left to call the healer, anger and embarrassment mixing together in my chest. My weakness was no longer private. Soon someone else would examine me and give Silverthorn one more reason to wonder whether I belonged here at all. A knock came at the door, followed by a woman’s calm voice. “Meredith? I’m Yara, the pack healer.” “Come in,” I said, forcing myself to stand. The woman who entered was older than me, maybe in her early forties, with dark hair pulled back and steady gray eyes. She carried a leather bag and moved with the kind of calm professionalism that came from years of experience.

It was Light, breathless, shaking just enough to make something in my chest clench. Black purred. She’s beautiful. Beautiful was even an understatement . I took her in properly then, fighting the war going on inside me. Her lips were soft and full, the kind of lips that could make a man forget his own name. Her eyes stormy gray were alive with confusion and something else I couldn’t name. Her skin looked like it would taste warm. Sweet. Damn it. I hadn’t felt this alive in years, and I hated it. Where was she during the Selection? All that wasted time parading a dozen Luna candidates who couldn’t even stir my wolf and she was here?

Up above, behind the frost-streaked glass of her chamber window, Meredith watched them. Her hands clenched the windowsill so hard her knuckles turned bone-white. She had been patient. She had played her part. But this? This was a line crossed. That white-haired little outsider had ruined everything. And she would not be replaced. Meredith turned, snatched her long gray cloak from the back of the chair, and threw it over her shoulders. Her footsteps were silent as she left through a side exit, slipping into the forest like a shadow. She had a meeting to attend.
