Yet his body still shrinks under my heated stare. “Just pull up over there, get the car ready for a fast exit.” I order out as I exit the vehicle, my warriors following suit in the other cars. Calian, along with a car of his own warriors also exit their vehicles, walking over to me as I take in the sheer height of the gates. They are as high as trees. Impossible to climb. I spot a camera aimed in our direction…so they may be rogues but they still have access to technology. I wonder how they managed to gain such resources.

The reaction was instantaneous. Golden light flooded the dark cabin, spiderwebbing through the ancient runic circuits. Deep within the belly of the machine, massive geothermal engines roared to life. The sound was deafening, a deep, resonant mechanical heartbeat that vibrated through the soles of my boots and rattled my teeth. The console lit up with tactical displays projecting three-dimensional, glowing maps of the Earth's crust. Jinx dropped into the gunner’s seat, her fingers flying over the strange controls. "Weapons are online," she reported, her eyes wide with adrenaline. "Plasma banks are fully charged. The hull integrity is absolute."

The white sand shifted under fifteen thousand pairs of boots, creating a low-frequency rumble that traveled through the bedrock and into my marrow. The air was thick with the scent of unrefined fuel and the metallic tang of kinetic rifles. Rogues in scavenged leather sat atop rusted water tankers, their muscles tensed for the coming impact. Nulls in grey rags kept a rhythmic, heavy pace alongside defected Highbloods whose torn silk robes were stained with salt-sweat. They carried lengths of rebar and Barzil-scrap weapons that hummed with an unstable, electronic heat. I stood in the gunner’s hatch of the lead command vehicle—a heavy, six-wheeled crawler. The vibration of the engine traveled t

Cat followed to the landing, her vision still flickering between the physical world and the golden grid of the ley lines. Five men in tactical gear burst through the ruins of the window. They weren't normal soldiers. Their armor was etched with protective runes, and they carried silver-edged blades that hummed with a sickly green light. Elias met the first one mid-air. It was a display of beautiful, horrific violence. He didn't just punch; he dismantled. He caught a silver blade with his bare hand—the metal hissing against his skin—and snapped it like a dry twig before driving the jagged shard into the soldier’s throat.

formation, their rifles synchronized for a continuous beam of energy that could melt through a tank’s hull. "You can't stop the sun from rising, Vane," the Paladin leader rasped, his rifle humming as the energy built to a crescendo. "The High-Rise is eternal. You're just a speck of dust on a diamond." Leo stood his ground. He felt the Legacy Drive in his vest heating up, turning from a dull throb to a scorching burn. He reached into the case, not pulling the drive out, but simply touching the lead-shielding to draw out the excess static.

Slowly, agonizingly, we began the one-mile ascent back to the surface. I leaned my head back against the cold iron wall, staring at the fifty slivers of the world's heart floating in front of me. We had the densest metal in existence. We had the ammunition for the repulsion grid. Now, we just had to figure out how to pin the ocean to the floor.

Haris asked. "Mercenaries," Marcus replied. "They scattered the moment the gas hit. They aren't loyal to a dead man. Without Dewangga’s bankroll, they’ll vanish back into the underworld." Serena closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the cushioned seat. The adrenaline that had kept her upright was beginning to ebb, replaced by a bone-deep exhaustion. She thought of Clarisa, safe in a house in Bogor, blissfully unaware that her mother had just walked through fire.

I would have achieved so much, and most importantly, my parents would still be alive. How I wished I hadn't given up so much for him. “Piiiiiiiiii...!” I suddenly heard the sound of an approaching car. Slowly, I turned to my left, but it was too late because the next second, I was lying in a pool of my own blood, alone on the deserted road. Finally... I'm going to die and leave this wicked world behind. Am I seeing double? Why am I seeing the stars and the moon when it's raining?

Torin roared, laying down a burst of suppressive fire into the catwalks above to keep any remaining snipers pinned down. Agnes and Maeve sprinted through the freezing rain, their boots splashing through the flooded loading bay. Rhys stayed at their backs, a towering, indestructible shield, intercepting a stray plasma bolt with his bare, wrapped forearm, letting the moonstone weave absorb the lethal heat before tossing a secondary kinetic blast into the ceiling to collapse the bay doors behind them.
