THE MARRIAGE GAME
The room feels like it's closing in on me, the walls pressing down until I can't tell where they end, and I begin.
He lunges at her, and instinct takes over. My finger squeezes the trigger, and the sound of the gunshot is deafening, drowning out everything else. My father's body jerks, then crumples to the ground in a lifeless heap. The knife falls from his hand, clattering to the floor.
Silence follows, thick and suffocating. My hand is still wrapped around the gun, fingers numb, but I can't let go. My knees give out, and I collapse, the world spinning until everything goes black.
