Claws became fingers and toes, respectively. In no time, what it was that was standing before me was not a hideous dragon anymore... but a teenage boy. Suddenly, I heard a telepathic message close to my ears: “Transmogrification!” Without bothering to guess too much as to who had spoken, I asked, also through mind telepathy, “What does that mean?”

"Was," I said, emphasizing the past tense. "People can change, Jace. I'm living proof of that." He looked at me then, really looked at me, and I saw the moment he understood what I was saying. Not just that people could change, but that I was beginning to believe he had changed. That maybe, just maybe, the transformation I'd undergone wasn't the only significant growth that had happened over the past three years. "Grace," he began, but I shook my head.

I laughed at myself. How ridiculous! I abandoned everything for him. And yet, not only had he moved on, but he was now standing in front of everyone, mocking my sincerity, too. I nodded at this. Zeke was right. I had no home anymore. First, my grandmother had given me a home. Then, it was Zeke. But now, both of them were gone. As despair settled over me, Zeke pressed a few buttons on his phone, deleting my contact information along with every trace of our past.

Not lost. Not gone. Transformed.

It was a period of transformation. Was all that loudness mere distractions? If a person wears his heart in his sleeves, then what does he hide beneath that chest? How can the silence be so mean and unforgiving? Does the refusal to speak simply means that there was nothing to be said anymore? In thirty days, a butterfly's life will be complete, coming out of the cocoon as a changed and majestic creature. But humans aren't butterflies and thirty days weren't enough. In thirty days, you're world can turn upside down. You can learn a new way to breathe. You can grow into something you've never imagined to be. You can laugh like you never did before.

I whispered, my voice echoing my wolf’s thoughts. From a distance, Atlas guided me through the transformation, his voice a steady anchor. “Now, feel the shift, embrace it,” he urged. My body trembled as the change began, muscles stretching and contorting. Pain mingled with exhilaration as I felt my form morphing, bones reshaping, and fur sprouting from my skin. The process was far more intense than my usual transformations, the sensation almost overwhelming. And that scared me. “Atlas, I can’t.”

Something else. Something shifting. Something alive. Something hungry. “How much?” I ask. “As much as you’re willing to give.” A pause. “And what do I get in return?” The voice smiles. I can feel it. “Everything.” That’s all I need. I let go of the rest. The transformation isn’t slow anymore. It surges. Consumes. Erases. Rewrites. Ninety percent gone. Replaced. Only fragments remain. My face. My core. Enough to remember.

He required to get the wicked hell out of this place. Pain tore through his jaw, his muscles, his exceptionally bones as his body swelled and morphed. His arms and legs broke and changed. Muscles tore and recuperated into their unused shape. His teeth broke and re-grew as his jaw extended forward. The alter was difficult and quick, and he kept noiseless through it all, knowing if he drew the others’ consideration from the appear it would cruel the passing of him.

I placed a hand on the glass and tried to will the poor kid to finish the transformation. “Derivare et sana…” I breathed, not understanding the words or knowing where they came from. Everything went quiet around me like the world stood still. A strange pressure built up in my chest in that moment frozen in time. It built up until I didn’t feel like I could contain it anymore, bursting out of me like the pulse of an EMP. The world resumed moving. Quiet and almost as smoothing as Dmitri had, the mangled boy shifted into a wolf.
