The Mate Agreement
I ask jokingly, flipping my hair and winking in his direction.
He laughs; a free, melodic sound that seems to diffuse into the breeze and resonate all around us, silencing the hustle and bustle of the streets around us. “She was all that, yes.” He says, and my demeanor falls at his use of the past tense. “But you remind me of her cause you’re both… conflicted, in a way. I can’t really explain it, but it’s like looking down a frozen lake, trying to understand if what I’m seeing is a fish or my reflection.” He pauses, shakes his head and laughs, but it sounds bitter this time. “I’m terrible at metaphors.”
